We learn how honoring our parents is ultimately more about our Heavenly Father than our earthly parents.
You don't have to choose between the relationship and the rules
Rules without relationship always leads to rebellion
Ex 20:12
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
What honoring your parents does NOT command: affection, trust, confidence, admiration
Eph 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Little kids obey and big kids honor
Honoring your parents means you give “weight” to the position they represent
Ps. 127:3-4
Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.
3 John 1:4
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Ex. 20:12b
“that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
